You Can’t Walk in Purpose and Stay in Patterns

“Our old self was crucified with Him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with.” — Romans 6:6 (NIV)

You can’t walk in purpose and stay in patterns.

You just can’t.

And for a long time, I tried.

I wanted all the blessings of obedience while still playing with compromise.

I wanted the peace of God while holding onto habits I knew were killing me.

I said Jesus was Lord — but I still had backup plans.

Still had escape routes.

Still had “just in case” sins I wasn’t ready to surrender.

But let me tell you what finally broke me:

I got tired of being stuck.

Tired of worshiping with my hands raised on Sunday and battling guilt every Monday.

Tired of asking God for purpose while living in patterns that made me unavailable for it.

And I’ll be honest — leaving behind my old life wasn’t easy.

But staying in it was killing me.

Romans 6:6 says that when we’re in Christ, our old self is crucified.

That means it’s dead.

Buried.

Gone.

But some of us keep showing up to the graveyard —

Trying to drag that corpse back into today’s calling.

You can’t carry the weight of your past and walk freely into your future.

You have to decide.

And that’s what most people avoid — the decision.

We want growth without pruning.

Calling without crucifixion.

Purpose without purity.

But it doesn’t work like that.

You’re not stuck because God forgot about you.

You’re stuck because you’re still entertaining the very thing He’s asking you to leave.

Here’s what changed for me:

I had to ask myself…

What if God is actually real?

Not just real as in a spiritual idea, or a belief I claim,

but real like… I will actually stand before Him one day.

Face to face.

Nothing hidden.

No excuses.

Just me… and Him.

And what if in that moment, I realize:

I couldn’t let go of temporary comfort…

and I missed eternal purpose.

I clung to a sin that didn’t even satisfy —

and I traded it for everything I was created to become.

That thought crushed me.

And it made me walk different.

So I’ll say to you what I had to say to myself:

Burn the fallback plan.

Break the cycle.

Put down the drink.

Turn off the site.

Stop running to the same comfort you keep repenting for.

Close the door.

Cut the tie.

Let the old you die —

so the real you can finally live.

God’s not asking you to be perfect.

He’s asking you to be available.

He’s calling you higher —

Not to control you, but to free you.

So if you’re tired of being stuck…

If you know He’s been calling you deeper…

If you’re ready to trade patterns for purpose —

This is your moment.

Hold this truth today,

God will meet you in your mess —

but He loves you too much to leave you there.

Obedience is the doorway to freedom.

And freedom is waiting.

Reflection Questions

  1. What patterns are still standing between you and the purpose God has for you?
  2. What would change if you believed God’s not just calling you out, but calling you higher?
  3. Are you living like you’ll stand before Him one day?

Pray with us…

Jesus, I’m done dragging dead weight into my calling. I don’t want to walk in old patterns anymore. I want to walk in purpose — real, holy, legacy-level purpose. Show me what I need to release. Strengthen me to actually do it. I don’t want to settle for half-hearted obedience when You’ve called me to so much more. I choose freedom. I choose You. In Your name, amen.

Love you guys.

Walk bold today.

Don’t let small sin rob you of eternal purpose.

You’re called. You’re covered. And it’s time to move.
